An uncommonly beautiful sound and utterly assured technique

The Columbus Despatch, Jennifer Hambrick

… Last night at the Ohio Theatre, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and violin, soprano and tenor soloists feted Bernstein the composer of musicals in an ebullient concert conducted by CSO music director Rossen Milanov…

“Dutch-English violin soloist Daniel Rowland was a virtuosic protagonist in Bernstein/William David Brown’s West Side Story: Suite for Violin and Orchestra.

Possessing an uncommonly beautiful sound and utterly assured technique, Rowland was at his finest as he sang through Bernstein’s inspired melody for “Maria,” as he glided through double-stops in “Tonight”, and as he soared through a tasteful rendition of the heartbreakingly lovely tune of “Somewhere.”

Many in the audience stood to applaud, and Rowland rewarded their persistent clapping and whistling with an encore – the first movement of Enesco’s Childhood Impressions, which was full of filigree and bursting with Slavic flavor.”
